SWIM WITH SEALS LUNDY ISLAND

THE 'BUCKET LIST' ADVENTURE

Join us for this unforgettable 'bucket list' adventure swimming with seals at Lundy Island!

Leaving Ilfracombe in the morning we head to one of our favourite spots for a first swim. Taking to the water is fun but not at all compulsory and friends and family are welcome to remain on board to take pics and drink tea!

Lunch can either be on board or ashore at the Marsico Tavern subject to landing conditions. A flexible afternoon itinerary can include more water time or a trip around the island if conditions allow. We can decide on the day!

Masks, snorkels and fins provided and wetsuit hire available on request £10 PER WETSUIT

Atlantic Grey Seals

Atlantic grey seals, known for their distinctive spotted coats and large size, are among the most fascinating marine mammals found along the coasts of Lundy Island. Typically weighing between 200 to 300 kilograms, these seals are easily recognisable by their long, streamlined bodies and prominent snouts. They are excellent divers, capable of plunging to depths of over 200 meters in search of fish, squid, and crustaceans, which make up their diet.

Grey seals are social creatures, often seen basking on rocks or beaches in large groups, particularly during the breeding season. Their playful nature and inquisitive behaviour make them a favourite among wildlife enthusiasts and marine biologists alike. Furthermore, conservation efforts have helped their populations recover in recent years, allowing more people to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitats.

Lundy Island

Lundy Island, located in the Bristol Channel, is a unique gem that boasts a rich tapestry of wildlife and history. Renowned for its diverse ecosystems, the island is home to over 40,000 seabirds, including puffins and razorbills, which nest along its dramatic cliffs. The surrounding waters are teeming with marine life, making it a haven for seals and various fish species.

Historically, Lundy has a fascinating past; it has been inhabited since the Iron Age and has seen the rise and fall of different civilizations, including being a base for pirates in the 17th century. The island is also known for its medieval castle ruins and the remnants of a Victorian lighthouse, which tell the story of its strategic importance over the centuries. Today, Lundy is a designated Marine Nature Reserve, preserving its natural beauty and historical significance for future generations to explore and enjoy.

The day

Swimming with seals at Lundy Island is a full day excursion.

Our epic journey begins bright and early as we set sail from Ilfracombe Harbour, with our adventure kicking off around 8am (weather and tide permitting, of course!). The journey across takes about 1.5 hours - plenty of time to kick back, relax, take a read of our seal code of conduct and soak in the breathtaking views!

Once we arrive at Lundy Island, our awesome skipper and crew will pick the perfect spot for your first swim. Usually, we pick up a mooring on the stunning waters on the East Side, at places like Gannets Bay or Brazens Ward. And guess what? There's no time limit here! We want you to have the absolute BEST day ever, so swim to your heart's content!

After you’ve warmed up and refuelled with some cozy tea (or hot chocolate), we’ll map out the rest of your day with exciting options like:

- A Scenic 360° Tour Around Lundy Island: This is a must-do, especially in May and June when we might catch a glimpse of the adorable Lundy Puffins!

- Another Splashy Seal Swim: We’ll find another fantastic spot for you to swim with seals!

- Time to Explore Lundy Island: Depending on how the day unfolds, you’ll have around 2 hours to wander the island, soak in its charm, and maybe even sip a pint at the local tavern!

WHAT SHALL WE BRING?

Please be prepared for a full day at sea and variable conditions the open water crossing is approximately 1.5 hours.
